Like the Hank Williams Jr. song goes, “If I get drunk and sing all night long, I’m just carrying on an old family tradition.” It appears to me that the Democrats opposition to the war on terror is likewise, just carrying on an old family tradition.<\/p>\n
I was watching a program on PBS this weekend about the civil war in Georgia that was quite interesting. The description of the battles between General Sherman’ Union forces and General Johnston’ Confederate forces in Georgia were well known to me. There was a new aspect to this campaign of which I was unaware. Lincoln’ chances in the 1864 election were, at the time, regarded as slim. The war had been going on for four years and the Democrats deemed the war as “un-winnable.” Dissatisfied with Lincoln’s moderate approach to the abolition of slavery, a number of antislavery activists left the Republican ranks to nominate Gen. John C. Fremont as a 3rd party candidate to run against Lincoln. Lincoln had a revolt on his hands from within his own party and had to support a constitutional amendment to end slavery to appease his own party.<\/p>\n
The Democrats wanted the President to negotiate a peace with the Confederate States and end the war. When he refused the Democrats nominated Gen. George B. McClellan, a former commander of the Union armies who had been removed by Lincoln. The Democrats achieved the best of both worlds: a war hero as presidential candidate along with a peace-at-any-price platform.<\/p>\n
This made the Sherman’s campaign in Georgia and Grant’s in Virginia very important to show the nation that the war was winnable. As it turned out, Sherman was able to repeatedly outflank Johnston (you would have thought that after about the 4th or 5th time Johnston would have caught on to that maneuver!) As you know, Sherman was successful and captured Atlanta and went on to Savannah. But, that’ not my point. Listening to the opposition that President Lincoln faced with his war time efforts sounded like a news broadcast of today with the left wing of the Democratic Party and their peace-at-any-price attitude! The same rhetoric is coming from the Democratic left today with the war in Iraq. Peace-at-any-price! We can settle this whole thing if we just open a “dialog” with the Muslim Fascists!<\/p>\n
