{"id":418,"date":"2010-07-12T20:55:05","date_gmt":"2010-07-13T00:55:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.wb4eje.com\/?p=418"},"modified":"2010-08-03T08:16:29","modified_gmt":"2010-08-03T12:16:29","slug":"to-kindle-or-not-to-kindle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.n4rfc.com\/?p=418","title":{"rendered":"To Kindle or not to Kindle?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve been considering purchasing an Ebook reader for a while now.\u00a0 I have been reading all the reviews, doing my research, watching the prices, but until just last week couldn&#8217;t make up my mind.\u00a0 In the end it came down to two likely candidates, the Amazon Kindle or the Barnes &amp; Noble Nook.\u00a0 Both had features that I liked.<\/p>\n<p>The Amazon Kindle\u00a0 has been around for a while and enjoys high popularity.\u00a0 The hardware features are good, I liked the built in hardware keyboard, albeit small, it works quite well.\u00a0 Most of the readers today use the same E Ink screen.\u00a0 These screens although not back lit, but have excellent resolution and are readable at almost any angle and in any light that you could read a normal printed page.\u00a0 I used a friend&#8217;s Kindle for a little test drive and found it to be quite user friendly.<\/p>\n<p>The B&amp;N Nook had a couple of features that were very appealing to me.\u00a0 First was the 802.11 Wi-Fi connectivity.\u00a0 Both of these readers use AT&amp;T for the wireless connection for downloading books and I knew that AT&amp;T coverage here at the house is spotty at best.\u00a0 So, the ability to use my own wireless internet connection here at the house would assure that I had the ability to quickly download any books that I wanted to read.<\/p>\n<p>Second, the Nook has the capability to expand the memory with a Micro SD memory card.\u00a0 Rule of thumb of any computing device is you can&#8217;t have too much memory.\u00a0 That must be one of Murphy&#8217;s Laws, like you can&#8217;t have too much chrome, too much horsepower, or two much money!<\/p>\n<p>Similar to selecting a computer or computer operating system, when I think about an electronic book reader I think\u00a0 the most important feature would be the media that is available.\u00a0 That decision out weighs the hardware.\u00a0 You&#8217;ve got to have access to a large inventory of books, periodicals, blogs, and so on to make a Ebook reader worthwhile.\u00a0 After doing some searching on the B&amp;N and Amazon websites for some books I would like to download, I found that Amazon had more titles I wanted and slightly better prices.<\/p>\n<p>So I decided to go with the Kindle.\u00a0 Because I already an account with Amazon it was a snap to purchase the Kindle using their one click ordering and overnight shipping.\u00a0 I had the Kindle the next day and was downloading books.\u00a0 I now have a considerable backlog of reading.<\/p>\n<p>I guess I better get off this computer and get to my reading!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve been considering purchasing an Ebook reader for a while now.\u00a0 I have been reading all the reviews, doing my research, watching the prices, but until just last week couldn&#8217;t make up my mind.\u00a0 In the end it came down to two likely candidates, the Amazon Kindle or the Barnes &amp; Noble Nook.\u00a0 Both had [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[9,10],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-418","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-computers-internet","category-technology"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.n4rfc.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/418","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.n4rfc.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.n4rfc.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.n4rfc.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.n4rfc.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=418"}],"version-history":[{"count":4,"href":"https:\/\/www.n4rfc.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/418\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":428,"href":"https:\/\/www.n4rfc.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/418\/revisions\/428"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.n4rfc.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=418"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.n4rfc.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=418"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.n4rfc.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=418"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
